I’ve long been among the millions of voters who preferred anyone this side of Dick Cheney to George W. Bush for president. But as I’ve written, I was concerned with John Kerry’s ability to give undecided voters compelling reasons to vote Democratic this critical time. The pundits say 19 states and four constituencies: moderate republican, white men, youthful voters and senior citizens will decide if there will be a new leader to the western world.
Until last week’s DNC, there were many reasons not to vote for Bush, but few to vote for Kerry-Edwards. Now I believe Kerry will win bigger than anyone has yet forecast. The convention, it seemed to me delivered compelling reasons to vote for this new, sane team whose platform is inclusive, threatens fewer people at home and abroad to fewer, but will defend intelligently against both terrorist and Constitutional incursions. The Kerry team played up its leader’s war record, focusing on the center of American thought and emotion. The campaign is taking a high road, promising to focus to fight the right enemies and not deplete resources needed for elderly, health and education.
If the Kerry campaign can continue on this track and keep the momentum going, it seems to me that Kerry will not just win but will do it soundly from both a popular and electoral perspective. I have long believed that the American people have a wonderful sense of doing right at home and abroad. I think most people know that we have lost our way badly at home and abroad in the last four years. The Bush campaign will soon start hurling all sorts of ugly stuff at the Democratic nominees, but they have both shown they can handle the flack, and lead us out of the jungle.
Your lips to God's ears!
